Visiting Lecturer: Dr Austin Houldsworth

Dr Austin Houldsworth is a lecturer in Product Design at Huddersfield University as well as an Associate Lecturer at the Royal College of Arts and Sheffield Hallam.

His creative career started at Manchester Metropolitan University, where he did a course in Interactive Arts. He recalls the approach on the course as self directed briefs, which allowed creative freedom and self driven projects. After this course, he went on to study Design Interactions at the Royal College of Arts.

The lecture was based around Dr Houldsworth’s design career from his university experience and his Master’s Degree, to his professional work in the design industry.

He reflects how his PhD influenced how he works, by allowing him to ‘unpack’ his ideas in a different way; which is guided by intuition. By developing his ideas in a range of methods; drawing, sketching and model making, which makes current ideas arise.

Dr Austin Houldsworth encouraged us to create open projects and take risks in our design work during our time in university, as when we enter the design industry, projects will be more limited to the clients’ needs and the business’ image.
