Visiting Lecturer: Scott Duffey

Scott Duffey is a Creative Director at Listen Creative, Liverpool. The design agency has specialised in food packaging for over 40 years. Alongside this job, he works with his wife at their own studio, Toucan Tango, making greeting cards, wholesaling to independent stores around the UK, as well as selling through their online store.

Scott began design work through making band posters and banners for close friends. Scott’s main creative outlet is screen printing, which he learnt after he graduated from university. He spoke about splitting colours for print, which currently helps him with his day job as a packaging designer.

Attending art fairs and festivals was very much encouraged by Scott, in order to meet new people and fellow creatives.

Another point Scott made was that he needed a website as a designer, so he learnt how to make a website. Which in turn gave him a job opportunity as a front end developer, making email templates, later he progressed within that company when he showed his design skills.

Scott’s process to generate ideas is based on L.I.N.T. inspired by the little bobbly bits found on clothes, as they’re little bits but may become something.

L - Live

I - Interests

N - Notes

T - Think

This process is very inspiring as it shows that inspiration is everywhere you look and that any small idea could potentially develop into a successful project.

Scott’s lecture was extremely interesting as it gave an insight into how a creative in the industry plans and notes down their creative thoughts, and he encourages trying ideas even if they don’t work out.

At the end of the day, if you don’t try, you won’t know.
