Visiting Lecturer: Denise Courcoux

Denise was a student at University of Chester, studying BA Fine Art with English Literature (2002-05). When she graduated, she began her role as a volunteer at the Bluecoat Museum in Liverpool, later moving on to the Tate Modern.

Her role at the Bluecoat was Gallery Coordinator then Exhibition Officer. These roles involved organising the installation and taking down of exhibitions, as well as project management and gave the chance to work closely with artists.

During her time working at the Tate Modern, Liverpool, she worked as an Assistant Exhibitions Registrar and was responsible for funds, packing and shipping of fine art pieces, insurance, and Environmental & Security standards.

Both of these roles show that organisation and time management are important skills, however the main point which Denise reiterated was the importance of keeping contacts and networking.

Reflecting back, the lecture encouraged me to start looking at networking as an opportunity to find work or create professional contacts, rather than a scary and daunting task. Especially now when remote working has become a normal everyday, networking is key to connecting with people and other creatives.
